What Should You Expect From a Reiki Healing Session?

Reiki energy is 'intuitive': it works regardless of how you prepare for a session because it "knows" which area of your body or emotions need it most. However, you will be most comfortable during your healing treatment if:

  • You wear loose fitting clothes (you will remain fully clothed for all services).
  • You stay hydrated by drinking lots of water both before and after your healing session.
  • You try to refrain from drinking alcohol for 24 hours before and after your energy treatment.

During a Reiki healing, you'll lie comfortably on a massage table, fully clothed. You can request to be covered with a light blanket if you get chilly. Typically, the practitioner will start at your head and work their way down to various areas of the body, channeling the healing energy as they go. They may hold their hands slightly above your body or may lightly touch you in various places to distribute the Reiki energy. Please let your practitioner know if you are sensitive to being touched or if you have any injuries they should know about.

People who are receiving an energy treatment often report a feeling of warmth coming from the practitioner's hands. Sometimes, they may experience a tingling sensation or slight heat flowing through their body as they are being worked on. Sometimes, people feel nothing at all. There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki — it simply "is".

After a Reiki healing, many people report a sense of peace and a feeling of deep calm and relaxation. You'll be given water and time to sit with your practitioner to discuss any thoughts or questions that may have come up during treatment.

Many times, one energy treatment is enough, however, three or four healing sessions may be recommended if there are deeper energetic blockages that need to be removed.

What is Reiki?

The word 'Reiki' means 'Universal/God's Wisdom Life Force Energy' and refers to the belief that a person who is sick or stressed is more likely to have a low life force energy. And, when life force energy is high, people are more likely to be healthy and happy!

Although the practice of Reiki is thought to have originated in Tibet, it is actually a form of Japanese spiritual healing. It is not affiliated with any religion or New Age thought.

History of Reiki

In 1922, in Japan, Mikao Usui experienced a hands-on self-healing while alone on a mountainside where he had been fasting and meditating for 21 days. He fell and banged his toe while walking down the mountain. He was in pain and his toe was bleeding, so he grabbed it in his hand. When he took his hand away, his toe had been miraculously cured! Usui was so awed by this astonishing healing that he began to practice this technique, which he named "Reiki." Eventually, he opened a clinic in his hometown of Kyoto where he provided energy treatments and taught students how to give this form of energy healing to themselves and others.

Reiki Lineages

While the Reiki energy and properties remain consistent, the methodology of giving and sending of this form of healing has been handed down through various lineages since Usui's time. When a person learns to direct the energy, sometimes they are shown a slightly different procedure or they go on to develop a modification to the technique. In teaching this different style to others, a new "lineage" is created. Inspired By Peace, LLC offers energy healings in our Gig Harbor Light Center location in the Jikiden lineage, as well as certification classes to become a Reiki practitioner under the Jikiden lineage.

Jikiden Reiki is a form of the Japanese method that was handed down from Usui to Dr. Hyashi, a student of Usui's school.

Dr. Hyashi taught Reiki to his student, Chiyoko Yamaguchi, and she taught it to her son, Tadao. For many years, mother and son traveled throughout Japan, teaching and healing with Reiki energy. Ultimately, although Reiki had reached the Western world by then, they realized that the form they were teaching and using in Japan was closer to the original method that Dr. Hyashi had learned and taught to them. Tadao and his mother, Chiyoko, then decided to hold traditional Reiki workshops that replicated, as closely as possible, the form, style, technique, and intent of the system used by Dr. Hayashi in the 1930's. This was based on Mrs. Yamaguchi's recollections, notes, and photographs. They named this original process Jikiden Reiki, which translates to "directly handed down without alterations" and it became known as the Eastern form of Reiki.

Linda, of Inspired By Peace LLC, is a Shihan under the Jikiden lineage. She was personally trained by lineage bearer, Tadao Yamaguchi.

— Western Reiki

Dr. Hyashi also taught Reiki to an American-born woman of Japanese descent, Mrs. Takata, who had come to him for training. Mrs. Takata was trained in this system and eventually brought this form of healing back to her home in Hawaii. She made some slight modifications in the technique, but the healing properties of the Reiki energy were still effective. This was the birth of the Western form of Reiki.
